Riding a bicycle is a great activity for both adults and kids in Florida. It allows you to get around and explore the outdoors while exercising at the same time. Unfortunately, adult cyclists are still sustaining head injuries.

Head injuries decrease for kids, but not adults

In recent years, bicycle riders have experienced serious injuries when involved in accidents. Head injuries are among the most common. While the rate of these injuries has decreased in children, they have remained stagnant in adults. Many areas have implemented dedicated bike lanes and other safety features to accommodate cyclists. These measures have helped keep kids between the ages of 10 and 14 safer, according to a report.

The rate of children visiting the emergency room for head injuries due to bicycle riding has decreased by 49%. However, the rate of adult cyclists only decreased by 5.5%.

Who is most affected by bicycle-related head injuries?

Certain groups are more prone to suffering traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) related to bicycle accidents. Males of all ages are more likely to experience these injuries compared with female cyclists.

The study shows that while the rate of serious head injuries in children riding bicycles has decreased significantly, adults need more safety measures as well. It’s believed that children have been safer due to parents making sure they wear helmets whenever they ride. If adults neglect such safety precautions, it could explain why they have a much higher rate of head injuries while riding bicycles.

In addition to using helmets, adults can be safer riding bicycles by following the rules of the road and using hand signals whenever necessary. Avoid using earphones while riding to remain alert at all times.

Use the bike lane and ride with, not against, traffic. Make sure you wear bright clothing so you can be seen by drivers. Give plenty of room between your bike and the vehicle ahead.

Always take safety seriously to protect yourself when riding your bike.
